Overview
Monitoring elders inside their homes as well as during their outings is a key component of future care giving and healthcare delivery system. Recent advances in sensor technology, networking and computation enable researchers, caregivers and clinicians to contemplate systems that would enable elders live independently while maximizing their quality of life. This section will look at the need for Independent living technologies within the home and care settings. It will review current barriers to more widespread adoption of these technologies, review current commercial offerings, and present major design challenges and suggestions for further work.
